Sustainable development is one of today’s most important agendas. When selecting materials for products and how to recycle or dispose of these, sustainability counters in as a key factor.

As we strive to become more sustainable, biobased plastic, which is plastic materials made from renewable sources, is a topic to consider. Likewise, biodegradable plastic, which is plastic that degrades into naturally compatible substances, might be a way to reduce pollution from plastic that cannot be collected for recycling.

The Nordic Bioplastic Conference 2022 will bring together experts from the entire bioplastics value chain to update the industry on developments within the field. The event offers both industry cases, a market- and application overview as well as input from policymakers, consultants, and other experts.

In continuation of our last, sold-out Bioplastic Conference held in 2020, this year’s Bioplastic Conference features a diverse range of both national and international speakers including feedstock and raw material suppliers, plastic converters, brand owners, authorities, and organizations.

What is bioplastic?

Bioplastic is a term used to describe a broad range of plastic materials that are either biodegradable, derived from renewable resources, or both. This often leads to a bit of confusion regarding bioplastic materials and their properties.

  • Biobased and biodegradable plastics: These are plastics made by using renewable resources, such as biomass (corn, wheat, potatoes, etc.), and will biodegrade under certain conditions. These materials are often used for disposable items, such as packaging, drinking bottles, single-use food containers, and cutlery.
  • Bio-based and non-biodegradable bioplastics: These materials are made using renewable resources as well, however, they are designed to be more durable and have a longer life span. These materials are often used to replace metal components in e.g. vehicles and have the advantage of reducing vehicle weight, which increases fuel efficiency.
